Ikram Rahimov Announced Health Problems on Sixth Day of Hunger Strike
Baku / 02.01.19 / Turan: The editor of the website realliq.info Ikram Rahimov, who has been imprisoned, has been on a hunger strike for six days now. This was reported to Turan by his relatives.
Rahimov began a hunger strike on December 28 in protest against his transfer from Prison No. 6 to Prison No. 10.
He also demands an end to his criminal prosecution altogether.
According to relatives, Rahimov was isolated in solitary confinement.
According to the same sources, Rahimov already had serious health problems - his leg is inactive, dizziness occurs, and he has dramatically lost weight.
According to relatives, Rahimov criticized the violation of the rights in Prison No. 6 and therefore, he was transferred without any reason to Prison No. 10, where he immediately faced pressure upon arrival.
Despite his refusing to eat, food is left in the cell, and this causes him psychological stress.
Rahimov intends to starve indefinitely until his main demand is fulfilled - termination of the case on justifiable grounds.
Relatives fear for his life.
“Though we asked Ikram to end the hunger strike, we could not convince him. We urge human rights defenders, local and international communities to support Ikram,” a member of his family said.
The prison service has not yet responded to reports of Rahimov’s hunger strike.
Rahimov was arrested in October 2018 after the publication of an open letter criticizing Ali Hasanov, the then assistant to the head of state.
On June 12, 2018, he was sentenced to 5.5 years in prison. In protest, he began a hunger strike, which he stopped on the 30th day - September 5th.
On September 18, the Court of Appeal confirmed Rahimov’s guilt of extortion by means of threats, but by applying article 62 of the Criminal Code (the imposition of a lesser punishment prescribed by law), his prison term was reduced to 3 years.
The sentence to Rahimov was condemned by a number of international journalistic organizations. -06D-
