Journalist Convicted of Hooliganism Also Accused of Defamation
A new criminal charge has been brought against the journalist Afghan Sadygov, who has been sentenced to imprisonment. The head of the Executive Power of the Jalilabad region, Aziz Azizov, brought a lawsuit against him under article 147.2 (libel on committing a serious crime) in private criminal charges.
The lawyer Elchin Sadigov told Turan about this.
The editor and founder of the website Azel.tv, functioning in Jalilabad, Afghan Sadigov, was arrested on November 22, 2016 on charges of damaging another person’s health out of hooliganism. On January 12, he was sentenced to 2.5 years in prison.
The journalist rejected the accusations, saying that he was provoked for criticizing the local authorities.
Sadigov is recognized as political prisoner by local human rights activists.
The lawyer said he does not yet know which publication was the reason for the claim.
The preparatory hearing of the court was scheduled for March 7, but it did not take place. This was reported to the family members and the lawyer only on March 8.
Sadigov considers the claim as a private criminal charge unreasonable.
Thus, the European Court of Human Rights in its case-law decisions has pointed out that the criminal punishment for defamation has been illegitimate. -06B-
