The lawyer Nemat Karimli, only a week after the arrest of the NIDA activist Elghiz Gahramanli, managed to meet him in the Kurdakhani jail. Gahramanli was transferred there on 19 August. Before that, from August 12, he was held in the Main Directorate for Combating Organized Crime (MDCOC) of MIA.
The activist told the lawyer he was tortured at the Interior Ministry. Karimli told Turan Gahramanli was demanded confessions of drug trafficking and links with the Turkish preacher Fethullah Gulen residing in the USA, whom the Turkish authorities accuse of organizing a coup attempt. The young man confessed under torture.
However, on August 19, he told his lawyer he refused of his evidence and filed a complaint of torture to the prosecutor.
Gahramanli also said that a MDCOC employee named Shahlar put drugs in his pocket and then pulled it out of there. Allegedly, the police found 3.315 grams of heroin on him.
Gahramanli is charged under Article 234.4.3 (drug trafficking in a large amount) of the Criminal Code. In MDCOC, he was also questioned about the activities of youth organizations.
