Media Review for February 4, 2020
The impact on Azerbaijan of importing telephones from China, the possibility of reducing oil revenues, warning from the President to banks, and the difficulties created by unregistered housing for the state budget are today's topics of the country's Internet resources.
The website Yenisabah.az writes that some companies in Russia and the USA have suspended the import of mobile phones from China due to the Corona Virus. Experts believe that in Azerbaijan, phones and etc. can become more expensive. Since a huge quantity of goods is delivered from China to the countries of the world, a rise in price can affect not only phones. Such a situation could lead to a new global crisis.
The website Modern.az writes that the threat of Corona Virus may reduce oil revenues of Azerbaijan. How serious these threats are, MP Vahid Ahmedov argues. According to him, the threat of Corona Virus has reduced the need for oil in the Chinese energy market by 20% - 3 million barrels. Experts believe that the cost of Brent crude oil will drop to $ 40.
Since January 20, oil has fallen in price by 13%. In the first half of 2020, the average cost of oil is forecasted between 54-47 dollars. At the same time, lowering the price to $ 40 will not affect Azerbaijan’s budget much.
The website Yeniavaz.com comments on the speech of the head of state on February 3 in connection with the completion of the first year of implementation of the state program for regional development. Aliyev issued a warning to the banks, recalling the support provided by the state. According to him, in Azerbaijan all bank deposits are insured by the state and this increases the responsibility of banks.
In case of surprises from private banks, let them blame themselves, Aliyev warned. According to him, banks should contribute to the development of the economy, and not just make money for themselves. If a bank has problems, its license will be canceled, the head of state warned, urging banks to finance the real sector, rather than issue consumer loans.
The website Oxu.az writes about unregistered housing, which is detrimental to the state budget. For years, the process of including these houses in the state registry has been delayed. It also prevents citizens from using their property rights. In addition, it blocks the appropriate payments to the state budget, including property tax. Experts believe that certain problems arise also due to the subjective interests of the relevant structures.

Amid the bustling scenes of this year’s COP29 climate conference, a protest against whaling and deep-sea mining, organized by a group calling itself the FINS Initiative, drew significant attention from delegates and observers. However, questions have arisen about the legitimacy of the group, as an internet search yields little evidence of its existence beyond scattered mentions.

In the last two days, a "news" story appeared on TikTok about a whale spotted on Baku's seaside boulevard. The most "observant" users posted videos, commenting on the size of the animal. Later, other "witnesses" claimed it wasn't a whale, but a shark. Even later, a version emerged suggesting it was a submarine.
