Natig Jafarli arrested for political activities - lawyer (UPDATED)
The reason for the arrest at night on August 12 of well-known economist and public figure Natig Jafarli is his political activity, said a lawyer Javad Javadov in an interview with Turan correspondent. The lawyer noted that Jafarli is charges under Articles 192.1 (illegal entrepreneurship) and 308.2 (abuse of power, which resulted in heavy cnsequences, or to influence the outcome of elections or referendum.) What exactly is meant by this action is still unknown.
According to the lawyer, theer are no legal grounds for his arrest. Until now he has repeatedly been summoned for questioning as part of the so-called " NGOs Cases" and many times he testified. "Therefore, there are not legal grounds for arrest, and he could be arrested due to his social and political activities.
It is noteworthy that the incriminated Article 192 was decriminalized, but he has been chnarge dwith it," said the lawyer, adding that he would appeal.
In turn, the lawyer Alasgar Mammadli said that the arrest for 4 months can be in the case of serious crimes. Similar measures were taken in relation to the journalist Khadija Ismayilova, a human rights defender Intigam Aliyev, and others in the "NGOs do."
According to observers, it is possible, that on the eve of the referendum the authorities have launched a new wave of arrests of public figures in order to minimize the protests against the reactionary amendments to the Constitution, and turn the country intoa monarchy.-02В-
