Report by Kura Staff Causes a Stir
The press release of the Kura Staff Civil Society on the preparation of a report on the adverse situation and embezzlement in eliminating the consequences of the Gakh-Zagatala earthquake has resonated in the government. According to unofficial information, the head of the Ministry of Emergency Situations Kamaladdin Heydarov was called Nov. 8 to the President's Administration for an explanation of the reasons for the deficiencies identified.
Thus, in preparing the report facts of large-scale embezzlement of funds allocated to address the consequences of the earthquake in May 2012 were identified. The report means that much of the money earmarked for reconstruction in the earthquake zone (300 million manat) has been stolen and misused.
Immediately after returning from the presidential administration, Heydarov held a meeting to minimize the effects of the exposure and to strengthen measures to prevent leakage of the information to the media.
According to informed sources, a plan is considered to neutralize the Kura Staff activists, and in particular, its coordinator Oktay Gulalyev, who had already been arrested in April this year, but was released through the efforts of local and international community.
Three weeks ago, police arrested seven officers in the contracting companies involved in the construction of homes in the earthquake zone. However, information about the arrests has leaked just now.
According to official figures, the earthquake in Sheki, Gakh, Zagatala, and Balakan seriously damaged 5,939 houses and hundreds of social sites. 3,200 homes due to the state of emergency have been demolished and it was decided to build new homes. However, for more than 6 months, most of those affected by the disaster have lived in tents, and houses have not been built for them.
In the coming days, the report of the Kura Staff Civil Society will be presented to interested organizations and the public. It will be also translated into English and distributed to international organizations. -0 -
