Representatives of Red Cross Visit Rufat Safarov
Baku / 23.10.18 / Turan: Employees of the Baku office of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) visited Prison No. 9 at the end of last week and met with the imprisoned former investigator of the Zardob district prosecutor's office Rufat Safarov. Turan was told by lawyer Bahruz Bayramov. According to him, the ICRC representatives were interested in the state of health, nutrition and conditions of Bayramov.
"Rufat Safarov said that at present the conditions of detention, food and attitude towards him are normal," said the lawyer. Safarov thanked the ICRC staff for promoting universal right and humanitarian principles. He also noted that in connection with the facts of torture against him in the past, his statement was taken to the European Court of Human Rights.
"Representatives of the ICRC some time ago informed the government of Azerbaijan, as well as international human rights organizations of torture and inhuman treatment of Rufat Safarov," said the father of the convicted Eldar Sabiroglu.
The ICRC, in accordance with its mandate, does not disclose the persons visited in places of detention to the mass media.
* R. Safarov was an investigator of the prosecutor's office of the Zardab district. On December 20, 2015, he made a statement about lawlessness in law enforcement and resigned. In late December of the same year, a criminal case was initiated against Safarov on charges of receiving a bribe. In September 2016, the Lankaran Grave Crimes Court sentenced Safarov to 9 years in prison. Rufat Safarov is the son of a former deputy from the ruling New Azerbaijan Party, and the former head of the press service of the Defense Ministry, Eldar Sabiroglu. -05B06-
