Supreme Court Postpones Examination of PFPA Activist's Complaint
Baku/04.02.20 / Turan: The Supreme Court of Azerbaijan has postponed consideration of the cassation appeal of the activist of the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (PFPA) Fuad Ahmedli to the refusal of parole for an indefinite period.
The appeal hearing was scheduled for February 10, 10.50. A large group of PFPA and civil society activists came to the courthouse. Having forced people to wait two hours on the street, the court announced that the hearing was postponed indefinitely.
Activist’s father Zafar Ahmedov regarded this step as a violation of human rights. He said that the consideration of the complaint had been delayed since July and was obviously delayed for several months. At the same time, in August the term of imprisonment of an activist is already expiring.
** Fuad Ahmadli was arrested in August 2016 on charges of “violating the law on operative-search activity” and disseminating personal information of users of Azerfon mobile phones. In addition, he was charged with abuse of authority.
He was sentenced to 4 years in prison on June 16, 2017. The Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court later upheld the verdict. Human rights activists have recognized Ahmedli as a political prisoner.
In May, the Surakhani District Court rejected Ahmedli’s appeal for release on parole in connection with the serving of more than half the sentence. Higher authorities upheld this decision. The activist has 10 months remaining until the end of the sentence. -B06-
