The Nasimi District Court of Baku extended for another three months the security measure, arrest of Anar Mammadov , the head Election Monitoring and Democratic Studies Center (EMDS.) This decision was taken on the proposal of the Investigation Department of the Serious Crimes of the Prosecutor General's Office. The lawyer Elchin Sadigov considers the decision to extend the detention activist unfounded and politically motivated. According to him, no investigation is ongoing in respect of Mammedli, and there is no ground to for his detention in custody.
Protection will submit an appeal.
Anar Mammadov was arrested on December 16, 2013 on charges of illegal business, tax evasion , abuse of office. Court sanctioned his arrest for three months. International human rights organization Amnesty International has recognized Mammedli "a prisoner of conscience." Another organization Front Line Defenders included Mammadov in the list of 12 defenders in defense of which a camping was launched dedicated to the Olympic Games in Sochi. The real reason for the arrest of Mammadov is exposing the fraud of authorities during the presidential elections in Azerbaijan in October last year.-16B06-
