The integrity of the territories is recognized. What will be with Karabakh?

Baku/07.10.22/Turan: Azerbaijan and Armenia agreed on mutual recognition of the territorial integrity of each other,  a statement published on the official website of the Elysee Palace following a meeting in Prague between President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, President of the French Republic Emmanuel Macron, President of the Council of the European Union Charles Michel and Prime Minister of the Republic of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan.

The document emphasized that Azerbaijan and Armenia reaffirmed their commitment to the UN Charter and the Alma-Ata Declaration of 1991, in which both sides recognized the territorial integrity and sovereignty of each other.

Armenia agreed to encourage the EU civilian mission along the border with Azerbaijan. Azerbaijan agreed to cooperate with this mission to the extent that it will concern it. The mission will begin its work in October for a period of no more than two months. The purpose of the mission will be to build confidence and to contribute to the work of the border commissions through their reports.

Political commentator Rauf Mirkadyrov comments on the results of the Prague meeting in the “Difficult Question” program.

According to him, the reference to the Alma-Ata Declaration is not so important (the preamble of the Alma-Ata Declaration states that relations between the states that have joined the CIS will develop, in particular, on the basis of “mutual recognition and respect for state sovereignty” and “recognition and respect for each other's territorial integrity and the inviolability of existing borders").

“The main thing is within what borders both states became members of the UN. These boundaries exist. Of course, there is no exact border, but the approximate configuration of the territory of Azerbaijan and the configuration of the territory of Armenia is clear,” the observer believes.

In his opinion, it is a priority for the UN Charter. “But if we refer to the UN Charter, then we can only talk about territories recognized by the UN,” he says.
