AFRICAN HOG CHOLERA REACHED AZERBAIJAN
    On January 28 examination of tissues of pigs died in Nidj village, Gabala region, concluded. Examination was held by Veterinary Laboratory and it has been established that pigs died of African hog cholera.
     Press office of Veterinary Service told TURAN that on January 28 quarantine was placed in the village to prevent spread of the disease. Veterinary and sanitary measures are taken in Nidj village.
     Veterinary Service reported that this disease was revealed in Azerbaijan for the first time, but situation is under control. Veterinary Service takes required measures jointly with other agencies.
     At the end of 2007 African hog cholera has led to mass death of pigs in Georgia. Afterwards this disease was revealed in Armenia and many pigs were killed to prevent spread of the disease. Now the disease has reached Azerbaijan.
     There are no effective measures to prevent this disease and usually pigs are killed and burnt down. At present one kilo of pork costs 5-6 AZN in Azerbaijan, but after the disease cost of pork will go up.
