KAZAKHSTAN PREFERS TO SUPPLY OIL AND GAS BY TANKERS BECAUSE OF CASPIAN SEA"S UNCLEAR STATUS
BAKU/15.09.10/TURAN: The head of Kazakhstan"s Strategic Research Institute, Bulat Sultanov, stated in Baku that his country prefers to supply oil and gas by tankers across the Caspian Sea rather than any version of the Trans-Caspian pipeline because of the unsolved legal status of the Caspian Sea. He said any kind of Trans-Caspian pipeline (Aktau-Baku or Turkmenbashi-Baku) would also create an ecological threat to the sea environment. He said the Trans-Caspian pipeline idea is not popular in Kazakhstan.
He however said Kazakhstan is ready to supply oil by large tankers to Baku. `This way is safer. The oil would be then exported from Baku through the BTC pipeline,` he said. He said Azerbaijan"s tankers could be used in the oil supplies by sea. The sides could discuss the tariffs.
     * Azerbaijan"s sub-sea transport infrastructure includes 3,000 km of pipelines (for oil, gas and water). Overall 22 billion m3 of gas and 49 million tons of oil was extracted from Azerbaijan"s Caspian Sector in 2009.--12В--
