Erdogan's representative called Russia's claims to Donbass and Crimea "unrealistic"
Kyiv/29.03.22UNIAN: Turkish President's press secretary Ibrahim Kalin considers Russia's demands to recognize the annexation of Crimea and the independence of the "LDPR" "very maximalistic" and "unrealistic".
He said this in an interview with CNN.
"These are red lines for Ukrainians in Crimea and Donbas. And this is right, because it directly concerns the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine. We did not recognize the annexation of Crimea, as did the whole world. Even China has not recognized the annexation of Crimea ...They (Russians) really should come up with some other ideas," Kalin replied.
He added that Erdogan maintains an open line of communication with his Russian and Ukrainian counterparts to help achieve a ceasefire, especially with Russia.
When asked if Putin listens to Erdogan, Kalin replied that the presidents have "long-standing relations."
"Of course, Russian President Putin listens to Turkish President Erdogan, to his advice, ideas and proposals. From their point of view, it can be understood that they do not trust the majority of NATO countries, they do not want to talk to them anymore, whether it is right or not. However, such is the reality that someone whom Russians can also trust should talk to the Russian side. Otherwise, this war may last for months, years, and the world will not be able to afford another such protracted war. And, of course, we cannot afford another cold war," Erdogan's spokesman added.
Turkey offered itself as a mediator between Russia and Ukraine and held several meetings, including at the level of the foreign Ministers of both countries on March 10. The next round of negotiations will take place on March 29 in Istanbul.
According to a Financial Times source, Russia allegedly reduced the requirements for Ukraine, excluding from them "denazification", "demilitarization", the status of the Russian language in Ukraine. However, the Russians continue to insist on non-entry into NATO in exchange for "security guarantees."
In the West, they believe that Putin is not ready for compromises.
Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba, following talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, conveyed that Russia plans to continue its aggression until Ukraine satisfies its demands, one of which is to surrender.
