Authorities hurry to appoint the Director General of ITV

Election of the new Director General of the Public Television of Azerbaijan (ITV) will be held on April 23, according to the National Radio and Television Council (NBC).

The Board of the ITV, consisting of nine members, will elect the Director General of the Council.

There are four candidates for the post of the Director General: Jamil Guliyev (head of TV channel "Culture"), Shamil Shafiev, Nijat Mustafayev (journalists) and Emin Huseynov (Director of the Institute for Reporters Freedom and Safety).

The names of the nominees have been announced by the NBC only today. If elections are held tomorrow, it will be a closed non-transparent process. Candidates have not yet submitted their programs to the public, so the Board will elect the Director without consideration of public opinion.

On Friday, the information leaked in the media that the new CEO of ITV wil be Guliyev.

Elections are held in connection with the expiration of the next four-year term of office of the Director General. For two consecutive terms, Ismail Omarov held this position. But no last minute announcement has been made of his candidacy, even though the legislation allows it.—06D-
