Ilham Aliyev and Antony Blinken
Blinken, Aliyev Discussed 'Deteriorating Humanitarian Situation In Nagorno-Karabakh' State Dept Says
Washington D.C./06.09.23/Turan: U.S Secretary of State Antony Blinken last week spoke with Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev "to express the United States’ concern over the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Nagorno-Karabakh," State Department said on Wednesday.
During a September 1 call, Blinken "reiterated our call to reopen the Lachin Corridor to humanitarian, commercial, and passenger traffic, while recognizing the importance of additional routes from Azerbaijan," Spokesperson Matthew Miller noted in a readout.
Blinken also "underscored the need for a dialogue and compromise and the importance of building confidence between the parties."
"He pledged continued U.S. support to the peace process," Miller added.
In turn, the press service of the President of Azerbaijan reported that during the conversation, an exchange of views took place on issues related to the opening of the Agdam-Khankyandi and Lachin-Khankyandi roads.
Aliyev said that the separatist regime in the Karabakh region does not allow the opening of the Agdam-Khankyandi road and disrupts the agreement reached on the transportation of goods along it. Refusing to use the Agdam-Khankyandi road is a political manipulation and a deliberate lie to claim that there is a humanitarian or food crisis in the area.
After the opening of the Agdam-Khankyandi road, the Lachin-Khankyandi road can be opened with the application of the rules of the customs and border control regime of Azerbaijan, Aliyev said.
The import of goods by Armenia through the Lachin border point without the consent of the Azerbaijani side is a violation of the sovereignty of Azerbaijan. At the same time, the separatists are blocking the delivery of humanitarian cargo to Karabakh by the Azerbaijan Red Crescent Society.
Aliyev also said that representatives of the Armenian population of Karabakh in Azerbaijan were invited to Baku and other cities of the country to discuss reintegration issues, but they refused. -0-
