Conference on European Energy Security
Questions of oil and gas reserves of the Caspian Sea energy sources and geopolitical interests, transportation, conflicts and different approaches to them, energy benefits and economic development of the region were the main themes of the Round Table "Ensuring energy security in Europe: opportunities and obstacles of transportation of Caspian gas" organized on April 8 by the Center for Strategic Studies under the President of the country, together with the Italian Institute of International Relations.
The Round Table was attended by international and local experts, representatives of diplomatic missions, and MPs.
The Director of the Center for Strategic Studies Farhad Mammadov expressed regret that the transport of oil has become a geopolitical factor that contributed to conflicts and has become a tool of excellence for some states.
According to him, Azerbaijan does not use oil as a political factor. "In the field of energy Azerbaijan has a planned strategy. Oil revenues are aimed at diversifying the economy and development of the region.
SOCAR is the largest taxpayer in Georgia. In Turkey, Azerbaijan is one of the largest investors. In addition, the State Oil Company implements projects in Greece, Albania, Serbia, Montenegro and other countries.
According to him, the greatest threat to regional projects is the Karabakh conflict. At the same time, Mammadov expressed his lack of understanding of the double standards of Western countries.
"With respect to one separatist regime and those who support it sanctions are imposed, but this does not happen against another one," he said, calling for sanctions against the Nagorno-Karabakh separatists.
The Director of the Italian Institute of International Relations (Istituto Affari Internazionali) Ettori Greco supported Mammadov’s view. Formation of consensus on conflicts is important for the security of the region and Europe. The EU should take a more clear policy of energy security, which should take into account national interests, said Greco. -03B04-
