Ilham Aliyev proposed to expand composition of UN Security Council
Baku/02.03.23/Turan: Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev has called for the reform of the UN Security Council.
"An important issue that has been discussed in the world for many years is reforms in the UN system. The UN Security Council recalls the past and does not reflect present-day reality.
The composition of the Security Council should be expanded to include more countries and make it more equitable geographically," Aliyev said, speaking at the summit of the Non-Aligned Movement Contact Group on Combating COVID-19 in Baku today.
To his thinking, one permanent seat in the Security Council should be given to the Non-Aligned Movement. The country presiding over the NAM should occupy this seat on a rotating basis.
"I urge the member countries of the Non-Aligned Movement to start consultations on this issue and submit their opinions to the relevant UN committee.
Besides, we also support the idea of granting Africa a permanent seat in the Security Council," Aliyev said.
As an example of the inefficiency of the UN Security Council system, Aliyev called selectivity in the implementation of its resolutions.
"Some Security Council resolutions have been implemented for several days. However, as for Azerbaijan, four UN Security Council resolutions on the immediate and unconditional withdrawal of the Armenian armed forces from the territory of Azerbaijan have been ignored for nearly 30 years," Aliyev stressed. -06B-
