Leila Yunus Addressed City Council of Esslingen

Visiting Germany, the director of the Institute for Peace and Democracy Leila Yunus held May 3 meeting with members of the City Council of the City of Esslingen am Neckar, where on May 5 she will be awarded an international prize.

The central theme of the discussion was the problem of illegal seizure of property of citizens of Azerbaijan and the barbaric destruction of a single office of the Women's Crisis Center in Azerbaijan, Leila Yunus told Turan.

After receiving information about the current corruption in Azerbaijan, the mechanism of unlawful seizure of property of citizens in the capital, with the active participation of the police and judicial authorities (including the Supreme Court of the Azerbaijan Republic), members of the city council were struck with the heard and seen (demonstration of the video). They asked a rhetorical question:

"What might be the prospect of a country, in which the law does not work and basic human rights are violated, including the fundamental right to property?"

For citizens of Germany, it is very difficult to imagine the destruction of homes of citizens in defiance of the Constitution and under the personal direction of the President, and the payment of compensation on the basis of the amount orally announced by the president.

Acting at the City Hall, the Committee for Equality of Women and the society "Women Helping Women" were amazed by the history of the Women's Crisis Center, which assisted more than 13,000 women in the period from 2001 to 2011 and was destroyed on 11 August 2011 for a few minutes by a bulldozer.

Talking about the reactionary amendments made to the legislation on NGOs, L. Yunus stressed that they dramatically complicate the work of organizations dedicated to protecting the rights of women. L. Yunus called for a campaign of solidarity with Azerbaijan NGOs that protect the rights of women and have found themselves under pressure from the authoritarian regime.

The speakers for the civil society of Esslingen am Neckar expressed their readiness to continue cooperation with Leila Yunus. -02D-
