New Wave of Pressure on Human Rights Defenders in Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic NAR
The Resource Center for Democracy and NGOs issued a statement claiming pressure and harassment of civil society activists, their families and relatives by local authorities of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic (NAR).
In particular, abusive messages have been sent to the activist’s mobile phones and those of their families, a smear PR campaign is being waged against them in social networks and their email is viewed and tracked by unlawful interference. Among the persecuted defenders are Malahat Nasibova, Elman Abbasov, Ilgar Nasibov and members of their families. Those who use the services of the technical resource center are also being persecuted.
After the Resource Centre began operating in a new building, staff became aware of the constant presence of unknown people at the premises. This suggests a possible provocation against the Centre and its staff. Employees of the National Security Ministry warn people who cooperate with the Centre, not to attend "this dangerous place."
The Resource Center requested that law enforcement agencies stop such actions, identify and punish responsible persons. Otherwise, responsibility for any unpleasant incidents will be upon the enforcement agencies, the statement reads.—0--
