November 17 - National Revival Day
Baku / 17.11.18 / Turan: November 17 is celebrated in Azerbaijan as the Day of National Revival. On this day in 1988, in Baku on Lenin Square (now Azadlig), a continuous rally began in protest against the inaction of the republican and allied authorities in connection with the violation of the sovereignty of Azerbaijan by the separatists in Nagorno-Karabakh. For two weeks, hundreds of thousands of people continuously demanded that Moscow put an end to Armenian separatism in Karabakh. On the night of December 4-5, the Allied authorities carried out a punitive operation against the participants of the rally, as a result dozens of people were injured and one died. Nevertheless, the rally marked the beginning of a powerful movement, which was crowned in October 1991 with the proclamation of the independence of Azerbaijan. Since 1992, November 17 is celebrated as the Day of National Revival. Until the end of 2006, this day was a non-working holiday. However, at the end of 2006, the parliament removed it from the list of non-working days. Despite the great importance of this day, the current authorities are not holding any events. Even this year, on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of these important events, no events are being held at the state level. Azadlig Square, symbolizing the freedom of the people, has long been banned for holding rallies. Here they only hold military parades, show concerts, and in recent years the Formula 1 car race. - 06D-
