Objective TV nominated for freedom ranking 2013

Azerbaijan The Internet Media Project “Objective TV” has been  nominated for freedom ranking 2013 (Index Freedom of Expression Awards-2013) by the Human Rights House Foundation (HRHF) in the category Digital freedom.

Press release issued HRHF,  reads that under a high control of the print media, radio and television stations, tough repression against the opposition media, online-TV is one of the main sources of independent news on the internet,  and  an independent platform for critical voices in Azerbaijan.

The “Objective TV”  was organized  by the NGO Institute for Reporters' Freedom and Safety (IRFS), which is a member of the Azerbaijan Human Rights House, closed by the authorities of Azerbaijan in 2011.

The IRFS  is cooperating in this project  with  Turan News Agency  (which was previously awarded the prize of the Gerd Bitserius Foundation.) This informal professional collaboration allows both organizations to maximize the potential of employees.

Objective TV was created to provide alternative news on human rights, and plays an important role in ensuring freedom of expression, transparency and political pluralism. The project focuses on the issues that are usually ignored by many media: freedom of speech, the rule of law, transparency and civil rights.

The HRHF  reminded that this online TV is actively involved in advocacy campaign "Sing for Democracy" at the contest "Eurovision" and the International  Internet Forum, which was held in Baku in the spring and the autumn.

The creative project team prepares everyday  up to six video news in  eight categories related to democratic development, transparency, freedom of expression, and other basic rights. It also prepares a vox-pop program "Word  from the  street" and the roundtable "Difficult question." This year a new program "Democracy and Youth" was launched.

This year's winner of the  Freedom of Expression Prize-2012 became a reporter of the  IWPR (Institute for War and Peace Reporting), Idrak Abbasov, for bravery in the light of human rights in Azerbaijan.

For the prize “Award of People in Need Homine Hominis” were nominated: Emin Huseynov (IRFS), Mehman Aliyev (Turan News Agency), and Intigam Aliyev (human rights activist, the Legal Enlightenment Soiety.)

In the category of "Defender"  was nominated a well-known Belarusian human rights activist, Ales Bialiatski, who was arrested in 2011 and sentenced to five years in prison on false accusations.—0—
