PACE Pre-electoral Mission to Visit Azerbaijan
The election observation mission of the PACE September 11-13, will visit Azerbaijan to review the progress of the campaign for the presidential election on October 9.
According to the Council of Europe, a delegation of seven MPs led by the British parliamentarian Robert Walter will assess the pre-election situation.
The mission will meet with President Ilham Aliyev, the other presidential candidates, and representatives of opposition parties in the National Council of Democratic Forces (NCDF).
The program of the visit includes a meeting with representatives of NGOs and the media. Following the visit, a report will be made available on the findings of the mission on the pre-election situation in Azerbaijan. -16D-

The international organization "Women Press Freedom" condemned the arrest of journalist Shahnaz Beylergizi in Azerbaijan. A statement of the organization noted that this is the latest in a series of troubling state attacks on independent media in Azerbaijan. Shamshad Aga, editor of the "Argument.az" website, has been found guilty in the Meydan TV case of smuggling (Article 206.3.2 of the Criminal Code) and sentenced to two months and one day in detention. The decision was made on February 6 by the Khatai District Court of Baku, as reported by Turan, citing his lawyer, Shahla Humbatova.
