PACE summer session will discuss the new violations of democracy in Azerbaijan
PACE summer session will be held on 22-26 June in Strasbourg.
Among the issues to be discussed will be the report of the Monitoring Committee of the "Functioning of democratic institutions in Azerbaijan" on n June 23.
Among the issues to be discussed at the session is the situation in Ukraine, the right to vote of the delegation of the Russian Federation, the situation in Hungary and others.
The report on Azerbaijan includes evaluating fulfillment of Azerbaijan's commitments to the Council of Europe, the state of the judicial system in the country, the problems in the light of the upcoming elections in November parliamentary elections. The document states that the previous recommendations of the Venice Commission on the reform of electoral legislation were ignored by the national authorities.
The report finds evidence of non-compliance in the country of the right to freedom of expression and assembly, the dependence of the judiciary from the executive.
"Monitoring Committee expresses grave concern with the deteriorating human rights situation and the lack of opportunities for the activities of independent NGOs and human rights defenders, persecution of independent media."
The document also calls for the government to "put an end to the systematic harassment and suppression of critics of the government."
The report also highlighted the need for all previous recommendations and decisions of the European Court of Human Rights, the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe and provide a real separation of powers, freedom of expression and assembly in the country. -02D-
