Syunik "Meets" Pashinyan with Protest Action
Baku / 21.12.20 / Turan: Clashes occurred between the officers of the Police Troops and residents of the Syunik (Zangezur) region of Armenia on the morning of December 21. Since the night, about 2,000 employees of the internal troops have been deployed to the region, where citizens said they would not allow Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan to visit.
Earlier, Goris Mayor Arush Arushanyan called on residents to prohibit Pashinyan's entry to the Syunik region, after which he was detained.
In turn, local policemen refused to detain the mayor of Goris on December 21 and special force was sent from Yerevan, according to Armenian media.
On the way to Goris, Nikol Pashinyan addressed the residents of the region on Facebook live. “I am heading to Syunik to pay tribute to the residents of the region and to talk openly with them. I assure you that I will not look away when I talk to residents of Syunik. I have fulfilled and I am fulfilling my obligations to you in full,” he said and noted that he was ready to answer questions and give explanations, “looking you straight in the eyes”.
Let us recall that the reason for the discontent of the region's residents was the liberation of the territories of Azerbaijan adjacent to the Syunik region - Zangilan and Gubadli.
Local Armenians and the opposition in Yerevan regarded this as a betrayal on the part of Pashinyan. -02D-
