The idea of a confederation with Turkey is popular in Azerbaijan
Baku/02.04.18/Turan: The electoral platform of the presidential candidate of Azerbaijan, leader of the Democratic Party Sardar Jalaloglu is distinguished by the idea of changing the state status of Azerbaijan. Speaking on Sunday at the debates of presidential candidates, he stated that Russia poses a threat to Azerbaijan, and it is necessary to move to a purely Western vector of development. At the end of the speech, he promised that by becoming a president he would achieve the establishment of a confederation of Azerbaijan with Turkey.
The idea of Jadaloglu is not new, and there were many supporters of strengthening Azerbaijani-Turkish relations on various intergovernmental grounds in Azerbaijan.
The late political scientist Vafa Guluzade also suggested creating a confederation with Turkey. Former State Councilor for Foreign Policy Guluzade said that absolute independence is unprofitable for Azerbaijan, since the pro-Armenian policy of Russia does not allow itself to resolve the Karabakh conflict. Azerbaijan should join Turkey, which will strengthen the security of the country and will solve this problem, he said.
Answering Turan's question, political scientist Elkhan Shainoglu reminded that unlike Moldova, which was part of Romania, Azerbaijan was not part of Turkey. But the Azerbaijani and Turkish peoples have become very close over the past 100 years.
Even Azerbaijan's 70-year-old presence in the USSR did not shake the pro-Turkish moods of the Azerbaijanis. Azerbaijan and Turkey are strategic allies and an Azerbaijani-Turkish alliance has been formed in the region.
"As for the Azerbaijani-Turkish confederation, I am not a supporter of this idea, but it is advisable to discuss such a proposal. It is possible that Azerbaijan will face a situation that will force us to create a confederation with Turkey," Shainoglu said.
The chairman of the opposition Musavat Party, Arif Hajili, recalled that the idea of creating a confederation with Turkey had been earlier put forward by the chairman of the Ahrar party, Vagif Hajibeyli. The position of Musavat is the unification of foreign policy positions
Azerbaijan and Turkey and further rapprochement of ties at all levels," said Arif Hajili.
