The President of Russia visiting Armenia
During the visit of the Foreign Minister of Armenia to Moscow, preparations for the forthcoming visit of Vladimir Putin to Armenia in early December were discussed.
The parties also discussed the implementation of the agreements reached at the Moscow meeting of the two presidents on September 3 including cooperation in trade, economic, military-technical cooperation, as well as the framework of the CSTO and the CIS. This was reported at a joint press conference after the meeting, by the Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov .
"Armenia has decided to join. Today we can say that the process continues to carry out the necessary formalities, and Russia will do its utmost to promote the fact that it concludes on time," Lavrov said.
One of the topics discussed was the problem of Karabakh.
"We hope that in the near future direct contacts between the leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan will resume. Russia will do its utmost to help create the right atmosphere for the settlement of the conflict on the basis of agreements in a form acceptable to both parties," said Lavrov.
When asked what to expect from the meeting of the presidents of Armenia and Azerbaijan in Vienna, the minister said that this will be the first meeting in almost two years. Direct contact between presidents is the key to the recovery of an atmosphere conducive for the continuation of negotiations to find mutual consent.
"Naturally, as a co-chair , along with the U.S. and France, Russia is committed to the positions set out in a number of statements by the presidents of the three countries, reflecting the dedication of the co-chairs to the principles that should guide the search for agreements," said the minister.
The last statement adopted by the presidents of Russia, the U.S. and France in Northern Ireland highlighted the lack of an alternative to a peaceful settlement of the conflict and calls on the parties to reaffirm the fundamental principles of the OSCE, in particular, those concluded in the Helsinki Act. "With this position we hope that this appeal will be heard by both Armenia and Azerbaijan," said Lavrov. -02D-
