US Ambassador Gives Iftar Dinner

Yesterday the US Ambassador to Azerbaijan Robert Cekuta gave an Iftar dinner in his residence on the occasion of the Ramadan month.

The event was attended by the Chairman of the State Committee for Work with Religious Organizations Mubariz Gurbanli, MPs and representatives of religious communities in Azerbaijan, government agencies, the public and diplomatic missions.

Cekuta noted that Ramadan is a special month for the Islamic world, including the Muslims of Azerbaijan and the United States.

The current Ramadan is significant in view of the year of multiculturalism announced in Azerbaijan in 2016.

"Azerbaijan has a long history of religious tolerance and coexistence of many religious groups," the Ambassador said, noting the importance of continuing these traditions.

According to him, Azerbaijan plays an important role as an example of religious tolerance.

Ramadan is also celebrated by 3 million USA Muslims, whose number will double by 2050. "US Muslims work in the police and health, are military engineers and have other professions. In the US, Muslims are citizens like everyone else," said the Ambassador.

As President Obama said at the Iftar at the White House, many challenges in today's world require dedication, discipline and patience that Muslims produce during Ramadan.

"While respecting the shared values such as peace, benefactor, mercy and forgiveness, we reaffirm that regardless of religious affiliation we are all one family," Cekuta said. -03B-
