U.S. Says Will Defend 'Every Inch Of NATO Territory' Amid Russian Strike Near Romania
Washington D.C./25.07.23/Turan: In the wake of the latest Russian strike on the Danube River near Romania, the United States reiterated on Monday that it would "defend every inch of NATO territory," TURAN's Washington correspondent reports.
Secretary of State Antony Blinken spoke with Romanian Foreign Minister Luminita Odobescu about “collective security and unwavering support for Ukraine and Moldova, global food security, and cooperation on Black Sea security" the State Department said in a readout.
Blinken and Odobescu have also discussed the latest Russian attack near Romania which is believed to be the closest to NATO territory a Russian-fired weapon has landed since the war began last February.
"Since the outset of this conflict, we have made clear one principle with respect to our NATO partners, and we will continue to reiterate, and that is that we will defend every inch of NATO territory. The Secretary made that clear in his call with the Romanian foreign minister today," State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller told a daily briefing in response to TURAN's questions.
He went on to add, "President [Biden] has made that clear on a number of occasions, and it continues to be one of our fundamental bedrock principles."
