U.S. Urges Georgia To Implement Reforms To Acquire EU Candidate Status
Washington D.C./04.10.23/Turan: The United States said on Tuesday that it will continue to partner with the people of Georgia as they pursue a democratic, prosperous, and peaceful Euro-Atlantic future, TURAN's Washington correspondent reports.
"And we urge the Georgian Government to implement the necessary reforms to acquire EU candidate status, and we stand ready to assist the government in doing so," State Department's Principal Deputy Spokesperson Vedant Patel told daily briefing when responding to TURAN's questions.
Patel's comments came as Georgia's pro-Russian government, taking its fears of an imminent coup to the next level, this week accused the United States of sponsoring "a revolution workshop" in Tbilisi.
Patel called allegations against U.S. assistance projects "false", saying that they "fundamentally mischaracterize the goals of our assistance to Georgia."
"As always, our assistance is transparent... And we will continue to support Georgian organizations that work to secure fundamental rights provided by the Georgian constitution and Georgia’s international commitments and obligations," he said.
Patel also underscored that the U.S. fully supports Georgia’s independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized border, as the country has been facing Russian occupation.
