What is Contribution of Azerbaijan to Donor Conference on Syria?
The Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev arrived in London to attend the donor conference on Syria, which is held by the UN and supported by a number of European countries.
The conference is organized by Great Britain, Germany, Norway, Kuwait and the United Nations to collect funds for the victims of the five-year war in Syria and for the implementation of humanitarian programs. It is planned to attract about 9 billion USD from donors.
The neighbors of Syria, such as Turkey, Lebanon and Jordan, took 4.5 million refugees, hoping to get promptly 1.2 billion dollars, according to the conference organizers.
It is not known what financial contribution is planned by Azerbaijan, which is going through a serious economic crisis.
Speaking at a government session on January 10, Ilham Aliyev stated only that the situation in Syria and Iraq is seriously disturbing. "We also live in this region, and the events taking place here are willy-nilly reflected on us ... Millions of people living as refugees and displaced persons ... The fate of these people, of course worries us, because at the time we also came face to face with a huge humanitarian disaster," he said.
According to the Baku office of the UN Refugee Agency, only four families of refugees from Syria have arrived in Azerbaijan. -0-
