Arzu Abdullayeva: pro-government NGO is nonsense
Not improvement in the human rights field in Azerbaijan is for several reasons. One of them is high oil revenues, but in 2015 oil production will decrease.
Despite oil revenues, social status of citizens is not good enough. Such things should not happen in a country rich in resources, said Arzu Abdullayeva, the head of the National Committee of the Helsinki Citizens' Assembly, in an interview with Objective TV.
Deterioration of the social situation will probably become an impetus of activity people. However, the authorities are trying to pre-empt these processes. That is why the number of arrests and harassment of civil society activists increases.
Regarding the issue of political prisoners, it depends on the willingness of the authorities, who demonstratively show that can solve or not solve this problem. International organizations have a very limited mechanism of pressure on Baku, said Abdullayev.
Answering the question why Azerbaijan does not comply with the decisions of the European Court, the human rights activist said briefly:"Because they do not want to," and she referred to the unofficial information that Baku placate European Court to adopt solutions suiting Azerbaijan.
Referring to numerous summons to the prosecutor office the human rights activists and journalists on their trips to Armenia, Abdullayeva said that she also was summoned.
"It is done deliberately to intimidate people, so that people have the only way out - to become a pro-government. However, pro-government NGOs - is nonsense, " said Abdullayeva.
Answering the question what is the solution, a human rights activist said that the authorities should not be afraid of civil society and its people. The power must rely on own people in the situation with Karabakh, and in other situations. If the authorities work transparently and become democratic, the people will see it immediately and support. In turn, civil society should not be silent, it should encourage people to be active, said Abdullayeva. -03В-
