Baku/08.07.23/Turan: The trial in the case of 41-year-old Mahir Azimov, a member of the Muslim Unity Movement (MUM), who was arrested a year ago on charges of large-scale drug trafficking, ended on July 7 in the Baku Court for Serious Crimes.

Upon completion of the trial, the court reclassified the charge from  the Article 234.4.3 (illegal manufacture, production, acquisition, storage, transportation, shipment or sale of narcotic drugs) to the less serious Article 234.1-1 (the same actions without the purpose of sale) of the Criminal Code and sentenced Azimov to 4 years in prison.

On the first charge, Azimov faced from 5 to 12 years in prison, on the second - from 3 to 8 years in prison. The prosecutor asked to sentence him to 7 years in prison. Azimov himself denied the charges and said that the drugs were planted by the police themselves.

According to him, the police demanded that he renounce the DME, threatening otherwise with a criminal case. The defense believes that reliable evidence of Asimov's guilt has not been presented.

Lawyer Zibeyda Sadygova drew attention to the fact that according to the expert opinion in the case file, Azimov is not a drug user. On the other hand, the court found that he had drugs "without a marketing purpose." In this case, the question arises, if he is not a drug dealer and a drug user, then why should he have drugs with him? The lawyer said that Azimov's sentence will be appealed to the Court of Appeal.

The MUM considers the persecution of Asimov to be politically motivated. The Movement noted that more than 60 activists of the organization are currently being held in prisons, including its leader Taleh Bagirzade, who was arrested in 2015 during a special operation in Nardaran and sentenced to 20 years in prison. ---06B---
