Allahverdiyev suffers in prison

The family of the journalist Faramaz Allahverdiyev sentenced to 4.5 years in prison reported on his deteriorating health. At a press conference at the Media Center today the journalist’s wife Tahira Allahverdiyeva said he had strained bowel problems, his blood pressure was falling and he was suffering from a severe migraine.

According to her, the family's financial situation is so complex that they cannot visit him and give him food, and 6-month’s rent for the rented apartment in Baku was not paid. The wife of the journalist worked in a store before, but two months ago she was fired, and now she does not work anywhere. Dependent on her are two children – a schoolchild and a student.

Faramaz Allahverdiyev was arrested on April 17, 2012, and on August 22 the decision of the court of the Nizami district of Baku sentenced him to 4.5 years under article 318 (illegal border crossing) and 220 (call to riot). In November, his appeal was considered and he was denied a trial. He appealed against the decision of the Appeals Court, and within a month, this application should be considered.

In fact, the arrest and subsequent conviction of Faramaz Allahverdiyev were politically motivated, according to his brother Qurban Allahverdiyev. All charges against him were contrived. Earlier this year, Faramaz Allahverdiyev wrote two investigative articles and posted them on social networks. The first concerned the oil revenues, which go from Azerbaijan to Italy and the other concerned candles, imported to Azerbaijan from Russia. In his articles, he said that the "traces" led to the family of the First Lady. According to his brother, this is the truth behind the arrest of Faramaz Allahverdiyev and his subsequent condemnation.

Allahverdiev in November 1988 was one of the heroes of the hunger strike in Liberty (Lenin) Square in defense of Karabakh. He was arrested and spent several months in the Moscow detention center Lefortovo. In 1997, he was sentenced to 2.5 years in prison for "destruction of monuments of history," and specifically for the removal of the monument to Lenin in 1992 in the Sharur region, where Faramaz was the chief executive.

During imprisonment in 2007 for defamation, he sewed his mouth to protest against the unjust sentence.

In 2009, once again, he was sentenced to three months of imprisonment under Article 148 (insult) and 147.2 (defamation of a felony).  -04C-
