Anar Mammadli bidder for the award of Vaclav Havel

The human rights defender Anar Mammadli is one of the three candidates for the award named Vaclav Havel in 2014.

According to the radio Azadlig, together with Anar Mammadli the contenders are the Israeli organization B'tselem, which protects the rights of the Palestinians, as well as the Malta branch of the international organization Jesuit, protecting the rights of refugees and asylum-seekers.

This award is given for the second year and the goal is score of advocacy. Last year, the winner was the Belarusian human rights activist Ales Byalyatsky.

Finalists selected from 56 applicants. The winner will be revealed on September 28 and the next day it will be announced. The amount of premium is 79 thousand dollars.

Head of the Election Monitoring Center and Democracy Studies Anar Mammadli was arrested on December 17, 2013. Mammadli was sentenced by the Baku Court of Grave Crimes to 5.5 years in prison on charges of illegal business, the misuse of office, and tax evasion.

Amnesty International declared Mammadli a prisoner of conscience. -16d04-
