Appeal against arrest of Nazim Beidemirli filed
Baku/06.07.23/Turan: An appeal was filed against the decision on arrest of former Azerbaijani MP, businessman and public figure Nazim Beydemirli.
His lawyer Agil Lahij informed Turan about it.
The complaint raises the question of rejection of the presentation of the investigating authority and the cancellation of the decision on the measure of restraint.
The lawyer said that Beydemirli is imprisoned in Baku SIZO No 1.
As a reminder, Beydemirli was detained on 4 July by the Interior Ministry's Chief Directorate for Combating Organised Crime. He was charged under Article 182.2.4 (extortion by threatening to seize property in a significant amount) of the Criminal Code of Azerbaijan, which provides for an imprisonment of 5 to 10 years.
Today the court chose a preventive measure in his case in the form of imprisonment for 4 months. Beydemirli rejected the charges, calling them trumped up and deprived of legal grounds. According to him, the real reason for his arrest was his statements due to the protests of Seyudlu residents of Gedabey region against environmental pollution caused by a nearby gold ore processing plant.
Human rights and civil society activists also considered Beydemirli's arrest politically motivated and aimed at punishing him for supporting the demands of the Seyudlu villagers. -1606В-
