Azeri journalists to visit Strasbourg
A group of 15 journalists and media professionals from Azerbaijan will be on a two-day visit to Strasbourg starting from tomorrow. The study trip is organised within the EU/Council of Europe Joint Programmatic Cooperation Framework (EU/CoE PCF) project titled ‘Freedom of Expression and Media Freedom in Azerbaijan’ to raise awareness on the European Convention on Human Rights and Council of Europe standards on freedom of expression and media freedom among Azerbaijani journalists and media professionals.
The participants of the study visit will learn about the work of the Council of Europe institutions in the field of freedom of expression, get detailed information on the CoE Platform for the Protection of Journalism and execution of the European Court of Human Rights judgments by the Committee of Ministers. They will also have presentations on Article 10 of the European Convention on Human Rights and overview of the European Court of Human Rights case-law with regard to Azerbaijan.
The joint EU/CoE PCF aims to provide extensive and substantial expertise on strengthening the capacity of institutions in the six Eastern Partnership countries to implement domestic reforms and bring them closer to the Council of Europe and European Union standards in the fields of human rights, democracy and the rule of law. The EU’s contribution to the PCF is EUR 30 million. -0-

During search and operational activities, on January 30 at 11:20, 16.4 kg of drugs were discovered and seized in the area of the "Geytapa" border post, located on the Iran-Azerbaijan border. According to the Azerbaijan Border Service, this prevented an attempt to smuggle into Azerbaijan 11.3 kg of marijuana, 5.1 kg of opium, and 1,990 methadone M-40 pills from Iran.
