Defendants in Nardaran Case Require Investigation of Torture
Arrested for Nardaran events, Abbas Huseynov and several other defendants filed a complaint with the prosecutor's office on the use of torture against them after being detained by police.
However, the prosecutor's office refused to initiate criminal proceedings on these complaints, the lawyer Fariz Namazly told Turan.
On 3-4 August at the trial on the Nardaran case the accused members of the movement Muslim Unity told about the incredible torture in the General Directorate for Combating Organized Crime (GDCOC) MIA.
According the Namazly, if the defendants claim of torture, the court has to apply to the prosecutor's office to conduct a reinvestigation.
"However, while the prosecutor's decision is not appealed, the court will not ask for a re-investigation," said the lawyer. However, if the information is communicated to the court about the murder, the court has to assess this, for this issue has not been investigated initially.
If it is found that the police officers were killed by their colleagues, the court shall issue a special ruling and send the Prosecutor General an order to start criminal proceedings, Namazly said.
However, at the conclusion of the prosecutor's office it is alleged that the detainees had injuries that resulted from their resistance to police.
"We have filed a complaint to the court against the prosecutor's decision and we pointed out how the injuries were formed and we asked to invite the witnesses. We also want demonstration of the videos made during the investigation. At present, our complaint is considered," said the lawyer.
It should be noted that the Interior Ministry and Prosecutor General's Office have not yet expressed their attitude to the statements of torture. -03B06--

The closure of Azerbaijan's land borders was discussed during the parliamentary session on November 25. While the government’s decision cites the coronavirus pandemic as the main reason—despite the World Health Organization declaring its end last year—Zahid Oruj, Chair of the Human Rights Committee in the Milli Majlis, pointed to other factors. He stated, "Opening the borders could result in an influx of hundreds of thousands of non-Azerbaijani refugees due to the Russia-Ukraine war. Additionally, in Iran, many are prepared to cross into Azerbaijan to safeguard their lives and assets amid military strikes. Such waves of refugees could lead to humanitarian, social, and cultural clashes that may threaten political stability."
