Defense Minister promises international standards
The head of the Committee against Torture, Elchin Behbudov, was received on January 17, by Defense Ministers Zakir Hasanov. During the conversation, which lasted more than an hour, they discussed the issues of human rights and freedoms in the army. After the meeting Behbudov told that the defense minister had a special meeting with the military prosecutor of the country. Security officials discussed the investigation of crimes in the army "in accordance with international standards."
According to Behbudov, military can be brought to justice sometimes even for minor offenses, although it is possible to confine disciplinary arrest. Hasanov also told the human rights activist, that food and social conditions of soldiers has been improved, what reduced the level of disease. The Minister also said that he regularly visit the front line, and personally controls the situation. -06D-

Last night, three earthquakes occurred along the Armenia-Azerbaijan border with magnitudes of 4.8, 3.0, and 3.8, according to the Republican Center for Seismological Service of the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan. The Ministry of Emergency Situations reported no information about any destruction or casualties as a result of the earthquakes.
