Giyas Ibrahimov was punished for reading books
Baku /24.09.18/Turan: Young activist Giyas Ibrahimov serving prison sentence in jail N2 was not allowed to read at night, said his mother Shura Amiraslanov. According to her, the warders do not allow her son to read at night, lying in bed under the light of a flashlight. "Earlier, Giyas was not llowed to get books, and now he is not allowed to read after "lightsare turned off," said Ibrahimova.
She noted that after the report of the guards, Giyas was imprisoned in a punishment cell. According to Amiraslanova, because of reading the books her son was kept from 9 am to 7 pm in a punishment cell, standing on his feet without food and water. "What is it, if not torture?", Amiraslanova noted. She urged international organizations to inquire about the health of her son.
In turn, the head of the Public Relations Department of the Penitentiary Service, Mehman Sadigov, told Turan that uniform disciplinary rules are applied in the penitentiary facilities.
"According to the rules, prisoners from 22.00 to 06.00 should be on a bed. Giyas Ibrahimov has broken this rule. The statements about the ban on reading books are not true. On the contrary, in penitentiary establishments encourage prisoners to read," said Sadigov. According to him, Ibrahimov was not imprisoned in the punishment cell, but simply made a remark in connection with the violation of discipline.
It should be recalled that the activists of the NİDA Movement, Giyas Ibrahimov and Bayram Mammadov, were detained on May 10, 2016 after they wrote graffiti on the monument to former Azerbaijani President Heydar Aliyev. They were convicted to 10 years in prison on charges of illicit drug trafficking. The international human rights organization Amnesty International has recognized them as "prisoners of conscience". -03B06-
