Government Wakes up and Postpones Trial of Khadija Ismayilova
Scheduled for July 22, the preliminary hearing on the case of the journalist Khadija Ismayilova has been postponed from 22 to 24 July. According to the lawyer Fariz Namazly, the court explained the postponement with a "lack of time." The process will take place under the chairmanship of Judge Ramella Allahverdiyeva.
Recall that initially the process was appointed for July 22 - the National Press Day. This was perceived by the public as a mockery of the authorities over freedom of speech and press.
Recall that Ismayilova was arrested on December 5, 2014 on the basis of complaints from Tural Mustafayev. She was charged under Article 125 (inciting to suicide) and arrested.
Later Mustafayev said that he testified against Ismayilova under pressure and withdrew his complaint, but the criminal case against Ismayilova has not been terminated.
In February 2015 new accusations were brought against Ismayilova: under articles 179.3.2 (embezzlement on a large scale), 192.2.2 (illegal entrepreneurship), 213.1 (tax evasion) and 308.2 (abuse of power).
Ismayilova and the management of Radio Liberty, where she worked, believes the charges are politically motivated. The real reason for her persecution is her exposing corruption in the highest echelons of power in Azerbaijan, including the ruling family.
Amnesty International recognizes Ismayilova a "prisoner of conscience". Her release is required by many international organizations and official Washington. -16B-
