Hunger strike action in solidarity with Bakhtiyar Hajiyev
Baku/18.12.22/Turan: A member of the human rights organization "Line of Protection" Zafar Akhmedov and a member of the Party of People's Front of Azerbaijan (PPFA) Zakrulla Nagiyev, also refused to eat today in solidarity with the public activist Bakhtiyar Hajiyev, who is on a hunger strike in jail.
As Rufat Safarov, executive director of the "Line of Protection", told Turan, if Hajiyev continues his hunger strike, he will be physically pressured, his hands and feet will be tied and force-fed, and this can lead to tragic consequences. To avoid this, he called on the authorities to stop the pressure on Hajiyev and release him from custody.
The head of the Penitentiary Service department, Mehman Sadigov, told Turan that Hajiyev went on hunger strike on December 17.
"Owing to the hunger strike, he has been taken under medical supervision in the medical and sanitary unit. And today, on December 18, he wrote a statement on the voluntary suspension of the hunger strike," Sadygov said.
However, Hajiyev's lawyers have not yet confirmed Hajiyev's termination of the hunger strike.
Lawyer Agil Lahidj believes that if Hajiyev really suspended his hunger strike, then he should have been given the opportunity to call and inform his lawyers about it.
However, in violation of the law, Hajiyev is not allowed to call lawyers at all.
Lahidj noted that on the morning of December 19, he will go to the Baku pre-trial detention center-1 to meet with Hajiyev and clarify the situation.
The head of the "Institute of Public Policy", Bakhtiar Hajiyev was detained on December 9 and charged with hooliganism and contempt of court. On the same day, the Khatai district court of Baku took Hajiyev into custody for a month and 20 days. The defense appealed this decision, and Hajiyev himself promised to declare an indefinite hunger strike if the court does not satisfy the complaint. On December 15, the Court of Appeal dismissed Hajiyev's complaint, and at the meeting he stated that he had gone on a hunger strike in the morning demanding his release. -06B-

Baku, often called the "Caucasian Dubai," is increasingly known for systematic violations of residents' housing rights. During urban renovations and the construction of elegant new buildings, thousands of families in Azerbaijan’s capital have been unlawfully deprived of their homes. Many, recognizing the futility of resistance, settle for inadequate monetary compensation for their irreplaceable property. A minority, placing faith in the Housing Code, demand fair compensation from construction companies but often lose everything—both their homes and any form of recompense.
