Intigam Aliyev Awarded Prize of Europe Human Rights Lawyers

The well-known lawyer and human rights defender Intigam Aliyev convicted in Azerbaijan has been awarded the Human Rights Award of the European Association of Lawyers. This was on his son Necmin Kamil’s Facebook page.

The prize was handed to Kamil in Vienna at the 124th Plenary Session of the organization today.

Intigam Aliyev was arrested on August 8, 2014 on charges of tax evasion and fraud. April 22, 2015 the Baku Court of Grave Crimes sentenced him to 7.5 years in prison. On July 21, 2015 the Baku Court of Appeal upheld the verdict. Amnesty International recognized Intigam Aliyev "prisoner of conscience".

In his letter to the European Association of Lawyers, Intigam Aliyev said that despite the strict censorship in prison, he gets letters full of love and support from the arrested Khadija Ismailova and other fellow convicts, as well as friends and acquaintances.

"Our love is stronger than their hatred, because the values ​​that we cherish are peace, democracy and human rights. Values ​​of the authorities are greed and violence," Aliyev wrote.

The European Association of Lawyers unites 1 million lawyers from 32 European countries. -16D-
