Journalist Arshad Ibrahimov Appealed to President for Pardon
The journalist Arshad Ibrahimov wrote to President Ilham Aliyev a petition for clemency.
Ibrahimov said that he served half of the prison sentence and was a participant in the Karabakh war. Ibrahimov asked to take into account the fact that he is a displaced person.
Ibrahimov was arrested on charges of extortion in Ganja on June 18, 2014. The journalist was prosecuted on a complaint of the former head of the education department of the Kalbajar region Mohammed Bagirov who said Ibrahimov had blackmailed him.
The journalist denied the charges and said he was slandered because of publications about the issue of false diplomas by Bagirov. Later, the same official was sentenced to 10 years in prison.
Ibrahimov himself was sentenced to 11 years in prison. Subsequently, the Court of Appeal reduced this period to 10 years. The Supreme Court of Azerbaijan reduced it to 5 years in prison.
