MehmanHuseynov has started indefinite hunger strike
Baku / 27.12.18 / Turan: A new charge has been brought against the blogger MehmanHuseynov, who was placed in a punishment cell for 10 days. In protest against the falsification of the new case against him, Huseynov announced an indefinite hunger strike.
The executive director of the Institute for Reporters Freedom and Safety (IRFS), EminHuseynov, told Turan news agency.
"Mehman called home today and said that he was placed in a punishment cell and pressure was put on him. The conversation lasted less than a minute, he managed to say that the message of the Prison Service that he had beaten the jail employee was a lie. The lawsuit has begun on the fact ,Mehman has not been charged. Mehman demands a meeting with his lawyers, but he is not allowed to see a lawyer. Mehman refused to participate in investigative measures and testifyb and in protest against the falsification of the new lawsuit, the pressure on him and the non-admission of lawyers to him,"E.Huseynov said.
According to him, the lawyer Shahla Humbatova was not allowed to contact and meet MehmanHuseynov on either December 26 or today.
She, in an interview with a Turan correspondent, confirmed that today she had waited forseveral hours in jail number 14, but she was not given a meeting with a client.
"They said they placedhim into a punishment cell, then they said they needed special permission"from the top", then they began to say that the investigator should come," said Humbatova.
She noted that the lawyer under any circumstances has the right to visit his client.
"While they didn"t let me go to Mehman Huseynov, he was taken to a telephone conversation, and he told me that he needed to meet with a lawyer," said Humbatova.
MehmanHuseynov was arrested in March 2017, and sentenced to 2 years in prison under a libel suit filed by the head of the Nasimi police.Human rights activists are convinced that Huseynov is being persecuted for exposing corruption among high-ranking officials, as well as criticizing the authorities. -06D-
