On November 9 Azerbaijan celebrates Flag Day. This day was established by the decree of President Ilham Aliyev, November 9, 2009. Then it was decided to build State Flag Square in Baku.
November 9, 1918 the Government of the Azerbaijan National Republic (ANR) for the first time adopted a tricolor (blue, red and green) as the country's flag.
After the fall of ANR in 1920, the Soviet flag was introduced. November 20, 1988 the tricolor of ANR was raised again at a rally in the central square of Baku and became the banner of the national democratic movement.
November 7, 1990 the Supreme Council of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic adopted the flag as the national flag of the autonomy. And soon the tricolor was restored as the national flag of Azerbaijan.
Azerbaijani flag is a flag of three equal horizontal bands of blue, red and green with a crescent and eight-pointed star in the middle.
The blue color is a symbol of Turkism (for the ancient Turkic nations this color symbolized heaven), the red color was a symbol of modernity and modernization, and green symbolized Islam.
