Prominent Lawyer Fuad Agayev Reprimanded
Baku / 10.07.18 / Turan: Another lawyer punished for participation in the defense of many well-known political and civil activists, journalists and bloggers has been punished in Azerbaijan. The Presidium of the Bar Association issued a reprimand to Fuad Agayev the day before.
Currently defending the rights of the REAL party's leader Ilgar Mammadov, the blogger Mehman Huseynov and other activists, Fuad Agayev was punished on the basis of the complaint of the Penitentiary Service.
It is alleged that Agayev insulted the head of Prison No. 2, where Mammadov is kept.
Agayev himself called the announcement of his reprimand an unreasonable decision. In his opinion, such decisions are aimed at limiting the activities of lawyers.
Agayev noted that during the discussion he presented a grounded argument for the insolvency of the complaint against him.
"I believe that I have proved this. The examination of the documents that the lawyer refers to his client does not comply with the law - especially the refusal to return them after the inspection. Obstruction of the activity of a lawyer is a serious violation. I said at the meeting that such complaints aimed at harassing lawyers are a serious violation. Despite the fact that although my speech, based on the law, was listened to, unfortunately, they did not take it into account and reprimanded me," the lawyer said.
In his view, such decisions pave the way for lawyers, defending the rights of their clients, to act with caution. Such decisions are aimed to put lawyers in dependence on the investigative bodies and the penitentiary institutions.
Since November last year, a number of independent lawyers, including Yalchin Imanov, Asabali Mustafayev, Nemat Kerimli, Fakhraddin Mehdiyev and Irada Javadova, were temporarily or permanently removed from the Bar.
Previously, Aslan Ismayilov, Khalid Bagirov, Alaif Hasanov, Namizad Safarov, Muzaffar Bakhishov and Elchin Namazov were excluded from the Bar. -0-

Baku, often called the "Caucasian Dubai," is increasingly known for systematic violations of residents' housing rights. During urban renovations and the construction of elegant new buildings, thousands of families in Azerbaijan’s capital have been unlawfully deprived of their homes. Many, recognizing the futility of resistance, settle for inadequate monetary compensation for their irreplaceable property. A minority, placing faith in the Housing Code, demand fair compensation from construction companies but often lose everything—both their homes and any form of recompense.
