Radio Liberty Starts Active Efforts to Protect Its Employees in Azerbaijan
Radio Liberty reported the start of actions to protect the rights and interests of its employees in Azerbaijan. This was stated by the chief editor of Radio Liberty Nenad Pejic.
The activity of the Baku Office of the Azerbaijani service of Radio Liberty was suspended after a campaign in the Azerbaijani government against foreign companies in December 2014 and its office was sealed.
The Azerbaijani government, acting illegally, has created misery for radio employees and their families, and some of them were forced to emigrate, said Pejic.
He pointed in particular to the fact that law enforcement officers raided the Baku Office and, without complying with legal procedures, withdrew printing and radio equipment and seals. He noted the detention and interrogation of the employees without ensuring the presence of their legal representatives, putting pressure on the relatives of the employees, and the establishment of unjustified restrictions for journalists to leave the country.
Radio Liberty also denounced the charges against the internationally recognized investigative journalist, employee of the Azerbaijani service Khadija Ismayilova.
She was detained on December 5 and is still in detention on the basis of accusations directed against Radio Liberty.
As stated Pejic, the corporation is ready to take all steps to protect the rights and freedoms of Radio Liberty and its staff.
The Azerbaijani service of Radio Liberty as part of the corporation Radio Liberty / Free Europe continues its function of collecting information and preparing reports from Azerbaijan and currently operates through digital and satellite broadcasting.
"To fulfill our mission, as well as during the previous 60 years, we will continue our activities. We regret the actions of the government of Azerbaijan, committed against Radio Liberty and its employees in recent months. We call upon the Azerbaijani authorities to respect fundamental freedoms and to put an end to the repressive campaign that tortures its citizens and cripples the nation's future," said Pejic. -06D--

For Elshan Hasanov, a 46-year-old man with severe hearing impairment (fourth-degree), what should have been a straightforward process to receive government-provided hearing aids has turned into a bureaucratic nightmare involving three healthcare agencies. As a result, Hasanov is forced to pay nearly 60 manats ($35) several times a year for what used to be a free service—a cost he says is untenable on his modest disability pension.
