The journalist Arshad Ibrahimov reduced the prison term

On Friday, the Supreme Court of Azerbaijan chaired by Judge Ilham Jafarov considered the cassation appeal of the journalist Ilham Jafarov. The complaint was partially satisfied, and the sentence was reduced from 10 to 5 years in prison.  Ibrahimov was arrested on the complaint of Mohammed Bagirov, the former head of the Department of Education of the Kelbajar region, who himself is now under arrest on charges of corruption. The journalist has been charged under Article 182.3.2 (extortion by threats), and on  June 18, 2014 he was arrested.

Ganja Court of Appeal sentenced Ibrahimov to 11 years in prison. Subsequently, the Court of Appeal reduced the sentence to 10 years.

Today, the protection asked the Supreme Court acquittal for Ibrahimov, Turan was told by his lawyer Behruz Bayramov. However, the Court partially upheld the complaint and applying Article 62 (appointment of a smaller punishment than prescribed), and taking into account Ibrahimov’s participation in the Karabakh war,  and reduced the sentence from 10 to 5 years.

Earlier Ibrahimov's relatives said that the pressure on him began after he posted on the Internet a video of the illegal actions of Bagirov, the chief of the education department of Kalbajar region: the issuance of false official certificates of the Ganja branch of the Institute of Teachers. The video was evidence of individuals who received fake diplomas. But Bagirov complained that the journalist extorted money from him, so as not to distribute these materials.

It is noteworthy that the Office to Combat Corruption under the Prosecutor General's Office in April 2014  filed a lawsuit against members of the Ganja branch of the Institute of teachers and Mohammed Bagirov on charges of abuse of office. -03D06--
