Baku / 18.05.17 / Turan: A preparatory meeting on the case of Shiite theologian Sardar Babayev will be held in the Masalli district court on Friday, according to the lawyer Neymat Kerimli. Babayev is charged under Article 168-1.3 (violation of the requirements for religious ceremonies) of the Criminal Code.
The defense will apply for the termination of criminal proceedings in the light of the groundlessness of the charge.
"Sardar Babayev was arrested three months ago for preaching in the mosque" Juma "in Masalli. But Babayev was invited there by a qazi on the region of the Caucasus Muslims Office Seyid Mirziyad. Babayev also read the sermon at his suggestion. In the sermons there was nothing illegal, or political, "said the lawyer.
Babayev was charged with conducting religious rites, which he had no right, as he received religious education abroad.
According to the defense, this rule contradicts the Constitution and the European Convention.
On the other hand, Babayev was educated abroad before the adoption of this prohibition.
Finally, recently the parliament introduced amendments that mitigate this restriction of the law.
