UNICEF urges to invest in disabled
On the International Day of Disabled Persons an International Organization UNICEF calls on the government and civil society to pay attention to the protection of the rights of disabled children and youth, as well as to invest in this area, reads the press release of UNICEF.
The head of this organization in Azerbaijan, Mark Hereward said that problems with disabilities are not related to their disability, but with discrimination in society. This situation hinders their development, communication with peers, and they risk to face violence and other negative aspects.
There are about 60,000 children with disabilities in Azerbaijan; it is the first country in the CIS which joined the Convention on the rights of persons with disabilities.
On December 7 UNICEF will organize a roundtable with members of the government, the Ombudsman, members of parliament, civil society, health professionals on the subject of child disability, the causes of its generation, the improvement of existing services and treatment to eliminate child disability. -04D-
